English

Earlier this year, we learnt about figurative language. Today we are going to focus on idioms, here's a reminder of what they are:

Copy out the idioms from below into your journal and jot down next to them what you think they mean, your parents might be able to help you with any you find tricky:

Reading

Yesterday you wrote a summary of all the most interesting things about the main character in your story. Today you are going to do something similar, but you will be pulling out the main highlights of the plot (remember, no spoilers)!

Read the example paragraph and then look at my list of things to include in your own writing. Write your paragraph in your Home Learning Journal - try to keep it together with the rest of your review if you can.

Here is an example of today's paragraph from litfilmfest.co.uk

When you are writing your own paragraph, consider:

  • Your favourite part of the story
  • What the author does really well
  • A little hint at the dilemma ('Max starts off as a brave adventurer, but this all changes when he begins to see enormous sea creatures' - I know that the dilemma of the plot is going to involve Max being quite scared and some enormous sea creatures, I can also infer that the story will take place near the sea).
  • Anything you might do differently to change the story

Topic - VE Day

This Friday is VE Day - the anniversary of the day WWII officially ended. VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. This year we are lucky enough to have a bank holiday to celebrate 75 years since the end of World War II.

Watch the video here https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr to learn more about VE day.

Morse code was an important tool in WWII. Have a look at the Morse Code alphabet below and see if you can crack the code.

Challenge: Write your own message in Morse Code for a family member to crack
