Reading and Phonics

Play the game

Can you drag the sh to make the word?

Say the word first and then drag the sh sound.

Remember it could be at the end or beginning of the word.

Now use your high frequency words. (They are in your pack)

Can you get these words out of your pack?  said-to-I-go

Can you make a sentence? Read it back, does it make sense?

Can you make up a silly sentence of your own using the words in your pack?

What is Shep doing?

What is a  shrub?   How many sounds has the word shrub?

Cuddly Toy Challenge : Collect as many cuddly toys together as you can find.

Put all the toys in a bin or box at one end of the room/garden.

Put an empty bin or box as far away as possible.

Take one toy at a time & place it in the empty box. You can do this as a relay if the box is a long way away or you are tired.

You can time yourself against yourself or others if you want to.

To make it harder you could think of different ways of taking the toy eg-under your armpit/between your knees/throwing it up & down if you are outside. Or you could travel differently eg hop/jump/backwards.

  • Can you practise counting BACKWARDS? Start with number 10 and stop when you get to zero! Use your number cards to help you – place them in order and touch each one as you count backwards! Try counting backwards from 20!
  • Choose one of the containers that we have been experimenting with this week.  Now find four different sized / shape spoons or safe kitchen utensils.
  • Investigate how many spoonfuls of water it takes to fill the container.
  • Which do you predict will take the most / least spoonfuls?
  • Was your prediction right? Talk to your grown up about why it was the most / least.

  • Ask a grown up to flash all the letter cards and get you to say the sounds as you see them.
  • Ask a grown up to flash all the high frequency word cards and get you to say the word you see.
  • Can you write a sentence or a short story about what is happening in the picture? Maybe try and join your sentences using the word ‘and’ or ‘because’.

enlightenedRemember to write down the sounds that you can hear in a word – don’t copy words that your grown up has written… use your brain, say the word slowly out loud and listen for the sounds in the word and write those down.

Daily Challenge

  • Take some washing up liquid and squirt it into one of your containers.  Add the water and using a spoon stir it up.  How many bubbles have you made?
  • If you have a spare plastic bottle, ask a grown up to cut the end off and dip it into the mixture.  Blow through the lid end and see if you can make a bubble snake!

Remember to email us some pictures of your learning!
