Modern foreign language

Our beliefs

At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that learning a Modern Foreign Language helps pupils develop a curiosity about the wider world and other cultures, while strengthening communication skills and confidence.

We believe that language learning should be inclusive, purposeful and enjoyable, enabling pupils to understand that languages are a way of connecting with others and expressing ideas. Through learning French, pupils begin to recognise similarities and differences between languages, deepen their understanding of their own language, and develop respect for different cultures and communities.

Learning a language also supports pupils’ character development, building resilience, confidence and willingness to take risks. We want pupils to feel confident speaking aloud, knowing that making mistakes is a natural and valuable part of language learning.

Our MFL curriculum

At Studley Green, French is taught as our Modern Foreign Language. Our MFL curriculum is ambitious and carefully sequenced, ensuring that pupils develop secure foundations for future language learning.

French is taught weekly by a French‑speaking member of staff, providing pupils with clear models of pronunciation and spoken language. We use the Language Angels scheme of work, which ensures progression across all four key language skills:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Learning builds cumulatively over time, with pupils revisiting and extending vocabulary, sentence structures and grammatical patterns. Lessons place a strong emphasis on oracy, helping pupils develop confidence in listening to and speaking French, while gradually introducing reading and writing as pupils progress.

Vocabulary is taught explicitly and revisited regularly so that pupils can recall and apply what they have learned. Language learning is supported through songs, games, repetition and structured practice, helping pupils remember language and use it meaningfully.

Through our MFL curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green with a positive attitude towards language learning, a growing confidence in using French, and a strong foundation for further study at secondary school.
