Music
Our beliefs
At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that Music is a powerful way for children to express themselves, connect with others and develop confidence. Through singing, composing, playing and performing, pupils learn to communicate emotions, ideas and experiences in ways that words alone cannot.
We believe Music should be inclusive and joyful, enabling every child to participate and succeed, regardless of starting point. Music builds important character traits such as resilience, teamwork and courage, particularly when pupils perform and share their learning with others. We want children to understand that it is normal to feel nervous, and that confidence grows through practice and encouragement.
Music brings us together. When we sing and perform as a community, we develop a sense of belonging, pride and unity, reinforcing our shared values and strengthening our school culture.
Our music curriculum
At Studley Green, our Music curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully structured, ensuring that all pupils develop musical knowledge, skills and confidence over time.
We use the Charanga music scheme alongside Sing Up, which together provide a progressive curriculum covering:
- Listening and appraising
- Singing
- Playing tuned and untuned instruments
- Composing
- Performing
Pupils listen to, learn about and discuss a wide range of musical styles and genres, developing their understanding of key musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure. Musical vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited so that pupils can talk about music with increasing accuracy and confidence.
Music is taught both through discrete lessons and woven into the wider life of the school. We are a singing school, and singing is used regularly across the curriculum to support learning, memory and enjoyment – from songs about friendships to learning in science and geography.
Performance is a key part of our Music curriculum. Through termly music assemblies, classroom performances and our school choir, pupils have regular opportunities to share their learning with others. These experiences help pupils build confidence, develop stage presence and experience the sense of achievement that comes from performing together.
Through our Music curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green as confident, enthusiastic and expressive musicians, with a lifelong appreciation of music and the confidence to participate fully in musical experiences.
