Art

Our beliefs

At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that a high‑quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, enabling them to express ideas, develop creativity and understand the world through visual language.

We believe that Art is both a discipline and a form of expression. Pupils should develop secure knowledge of artistic techniques, materials and processes, while also learning how artists use creativity to communicate ideas, emotions and meaning. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically about art, use appropriate artistic vocabulary, and develop a deeper understanding of how art reflects and shapes culture, history and identity.

Art contributes to pupils’ character development, building confidence, resilience and pride in craftsmanship. Through creating, evaluating and refining their work, pupils learn that quality comes from practice, reflection and perseverance.

Our art curriculum

At Studley Green, our Art curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and knowledge‑rich, ensuring that all pupils are equipped to think, work and communicate like artists.

We teach Art using the CUSP Art curriculum, which is rooted in evidence‑led practice and carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skill over time. Pupils study a wide range of artists, craftspeople and designers, alongside high‑quality examples of artwork from different cultures and historical periods.

The curriculum ensures pupils become increasingly proficient in:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Working with a range of materials and media

Pupils are taught to experiment, invent and create, while also learning how to evaluate and analyse their own work and the work of others using the language of art, craft and design. Vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited so that pupils can explain their ideas and artistic choices with confidence.

Art learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit key techniques and concepts, refining their skills and developing greater control and intentionality over time. All pupils are supported to achieve high standards, with adaptations made where needed so that everyone can access the same ambitious curriculum.

Through our Art curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green as confident, reflective and creative learners, with an appreciation of artistic excellence and the belief that they can express themselves through art.
