Computing

Our Beliefs

At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that a high‑quality Computing education equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

We believe Computing is more than using technology. Pupils should learn how digital systems work, how information is represented and processed, and how problems can be solved using computational thinking. Through this, pupils develop logical reasoning, creativity and resilience, alongside a secure understanding of how technology shapes the modern world.

We also believe that digital literacy and online safety are essential life skills. Pupils must learn to think critically, behave responsibly, and make safe, informed choices online. Computing supports our commitment to Character, Community and British Values, enabling pupils to participate positively, respectfully and confidently in digital environments.

Our computing curriculum

At Studley Green, our Computing curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced, ensuring that all pupils build secure knowledge and confidence over time.

We teach Computing using the Teach Computing Curriculum, which is structured around three core strands:

  • Computer Science – understanding algorithms, programming and how digital systems work
  • Information Technology – creating, using and evaluating digital content and systems
  • Digital Literacy – using technology safely, responsibly and effectively

Learning is sequenced so that pupils revisit and build on prior knowledge, developing fluency and independence as they progress through the school. Programming and problem‑solving are taught through practical, hands‑on experiences that allow pupils to apply their understanding in meaningful contexts.

Alongside Teach Computing, we use Common Sense Education and Be Internet Legends to explicitly teach digital literacy and online safety. Pupils learn how to stay safe online, manage their digital footprint, recognise risks, and behave responsibly in digital spaces. These messages are revisited regularly and reinforced across the wider curriculum.

Computing lessons emphasise:

  • Clear, explicit teaching of key concepts and vocabulary
  • Opportunities to practise, apply and refine skills
  • Logical thinking, creativity and perseverance
  • Responsible and ethical use of technology

Assessment is used to check pupils’ independent understanding and inform future teaching. Support is provided where needed so that all pupils can access the same ambitious curriculum and succeed.

Through our Computing curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green as confident, capable and responsible digital citizens, well prepared for secondary education and the challenges of a rapidly changing technological world.
