Our beliefs
At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that the Early Years are a crucial foundation for all future learning and development. The period from birth to five is one of rapid growth, and it is essential that children experience a nurturing, stimulating and inclusive environment where they feel safe, valued and confident.
We believe that children learn best when they feel happy and secure, when learning is purposeful and enjoyable, and when their individual needs, interests and starting points are recognised. High‑quality Early Years provision supports children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development, enabling them to develop the confidence, curiosity and independence they need to succeed.
Play is central to learning in the Early Years. Through play, talk and first‑hand experiences, children explore ideas, practise skills, make sense of the world and develop the language they need to communicate and think. Adults play a vital role in guiding, modelling, questioning and extending learning so that play leads to meaningful progress.
Our Early Years curriculum
At Studley Green, our Early Years curriculum is designed to provide a secure, stimulating and positive learning environment, where children can flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
The curriculum is carefully planned to support children’s development across all areas of learning, with a strong focus on:
- Communication and language
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Physical development
- Early foundations in literacy and mathematics
- Understanding the world and expressive arts
Learning is delivered through a balance of adult‑led teaching and child‑initiated play, both indoors and outdoors. Activities are carefully designed to encourage exploration, experimentation and problem‑solving, while building children’s independence and resilience.
We place a strong emphasis on language development, recognising its importance for future learning. Adults model high‑quality talk, introduce new vocabulary and support children to express their ideas, feelings and thinking clearly.
Assessment is ongoing and purposeful. Observations are used to understand what children know and can do, identify next steps, and ensure that teaching responds to individual needs. Progress is celebrated and shared with families, recognising the importance of strong partnerships between home and school.
Our Early Years provision reflects our commitment to inclusion, equality and high expectations. All children are supported to achieve their full potential in a happy, caring and respectful environment where good behaviour is taught, modelled and encouraged.
Working in partnership
We believe that children learn best when there is a strong partnership between staff, parents and carers. We work closely with families to support children’s learning and well‑being, recognising the vital role parents play in their child’s development.
Parents are encouraged to engage with their child’s learning and to share experiences from home, helping us to build a complete picture of each child as a learner.
Why Early Years matters
Our aim is that children leave the Early Years as:
- Happy, confident learners
- Curious about the world around them
- Able to communicate their needs and ideas
- Increasingly independent and resilient
- Well prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1
The Early Years curriculum at Studley Green lays the strong foundations upon which all future learning is built.
