Geography
Our beliefs
At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that Geography should inspire pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that stays with them for life. Geography helps pupils understand where places are, what they are like, and how people and environments are connected.
We believe that pupils should be equipped with secure geographical knowledge, alongside the vocabulary and skills needed to explain and reason about the world. Through Geography, pupils learn about diverse places, cultures, environments and communities, developing an understanding of both physical and human processes and how these shape the world around us.
Our local context is central to our Geography teaching. As a school, we use our immediate environment and the surrounding area to help pupils make sense of geographical concepts in real and meaningful ways. Geography also supports our commitment to Character, Community and British Values, helping pupils develop respect for diversity, an awareness of global issues, and a sense of responsibility for the environment.
Our geography curriculum
At Studley Green, our Geography curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced, enabling all pupils to build a coherent and cumulative understanding of the world.
We teach Geography using the CUSP Geography curriculum, which is structured around four key strands:
- Locational knowledge
- Place knowledge
- Human and physical geography
- Geographical skills and fieldwork
Learning is deliberately sequenced so that pupils revisit and deepen their understanding of places, spaces and processes over time. New learning builds on prior knowledge, allowing pupils to develop increasingly secure mental models of the world.
Geographical vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited so that pupils can describe, compare and explain places with confidence and precision. Pupils are supported to think like geographers by asking questions, identifying patterns, making connections and explaining cause and effect.
Fieldwork and map skills are an essential part of the curriculum. Pupils regularly use maps, globes, atlases and Ordnance Survey maps, as well as undertaking practical fieldwork in the local area and beyond. These experiences help pupils apply their knowledge and develop confidence in using geographical tools and techniques.
Recognising that many of our pupils have limited experiences beyond their immediate locality, we provide enriching opportunities such as visits, trips and contextual learning. Links to current affairs and global issues are used to give learning relevance and purpose, helping pupils understand how Geography connects to their own lives and the wider world.
Through our Geography curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green as curious, knowledgeable and thoughtful geographers, equipped with the understanding and skills needed for further study and informed citizenship.
