History

Our beliefs

At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that a high‑quality History education enables pupils to understand the world they live in and their place within it. Through learning about the past, pupils gain insight into how communities, societies and nations have changed over time, and how power, belief and knowledge shape people’s lives.

We believe History should be knowledge‑rich, vocabulary‑focused and carefully sequenced, so that pupils develop a secure understanding of chronology and can make meaningful connections between different periods and places. History teaching should go beyond recalling facts; pupils should learn to ask questions, examine evidence, explain causes and consequences, and consider different perspectives.

Through History, pupils learn about diversity, identity and change. They begin to understand the complexity of human experience and develop respect for different cultures, communities and viewpoints. This supports our commitment to Character, Community and British Values, helping pupils grow into informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens.

Our history curriculum

At Studley Green, our History curriculum is designed to be ambitious and inclusive, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of starting point, access the same rich and meaningful historical knowledge.

Learning begins with pupils’ own lives and experiences and develops into a coherent understanding of local, national and global history. From Early Years through to Key Stage 2, pupils build a growing sense of chronology, learning how events, people and civilisations fit together over time.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and deepen their understanding of key historical ideas such as community, power, civilisation and democracy. Teaching focuses on developing secure knowledge, alongside the vocabulary pupils need to explain their thinking clearly and confidently.

History lessons make use of a range of sources, including stories, images, artefacts and historical accounts, enabling pupils to ask questions and explore how we know about the past. Learning is supported through discussion, explanation and structured tasks that help pupils remember and connect what they have learned.

We enrich the History curriculum through educational visits, visitors and links to our local area, helping pupils to see how History connects to their own community and the wider world. Our aim is that pupils leave Studley Green as curious, confident and reflective learners, with a strong foundation for further study and a lasting interest in the past.
