You can add information to a basic sentence to expand it. Here are some examples.

 

Basic sentence: People ride bikes.

  • When: during the rush hour

  • Where: in the city

  • Why: to avoid the traffic

Expanded sentence: During the rush hour, people in the city ride bikes to avoid the traffic.

 

Basic sentence: I explored the castle.

  • When: At night

  • Where: in the remote valley

  • Why: to see if I could solve the mystery

Expanded sentence: At night, I explored the castle in the remote valley to see if I could solve the mystery.

 

 

Activity One: expand a sentence

  • Here are some basic sentences. See if you can expand them.

 

Basic sentence: I worked hard.

  • When: in my English class

  • Where: at school

  • Why: to get better at writing

 

Write an expanded sentence in your Home Learning Journal.

 

Basic sentence: Teachers plan lessons.

Activity Two: verbs and subjects

Now, highlight the subjects and underline the verbs in these sentences.

 

  • Oaks are my favourite trees.

  • After lunch I had a nap.

  • The new car is shiny and red. 

  • Over there, you can see the mountains.

  • We all like pizza.

 

Activity Three: rewrite a paragraph

  • Read the short paragraph below.

  • It has one fragment. Underline the fragment.

  • It has four basic sentences. Circle them.

  • Then see if you can rewrite the paragraph in your Home Learning Journal. by expanding the basic sentences and removing the fragment.

 

Vets work very hard. They look after animals. Who are sick. They help them to get better. I’d like to be a vet.
