Maths ideas to do outside of school

Counting and Number


  • Count the steps you walk to school or back
  • Count the trees, doors etc.....
  • Read car number plates,,,,add the digits together
  • Read house numbers ,,,, which are odd and even?
  • Pick a number and see how many ways you can see that number at home or when you are out
  • Make numbers in sand
  • play bingo with your family
  • count the stairs as you go to bed
  • count out the fruit when you go to the shop
  • Make your own number rocks collected from a walk by the beach or nature trail
  • Sing Nursery Rhymes or read number stories (see the other article about Maths through Stories)
  • Play board games,,,, snakes and ladders, dominoes etc 



  • What can you do in 30 seconds or 1 minute?
  • Write a timetable to map out your day.
  • Work out the difference in ages in your family.
  • How long does it take you to.....
  • How long does your favourite / least favourite programme run?
  • Look at local bus and train timetables and calculate routes to different places.
  • How fast can you walk at a normal pace?
  • What day was is it on January 1st 2010 / January 1st 1910? Is there a pattern?




  • Play a pairs game and count the winning pairs of cards in 2's.
  • How many pairs of shoes in your house? How many shoes altogether?
  • Arrange your toys in different straight line patterns and work out how many altogether.
  • Say a number sentence that describes panes of glass in a window.




  • Grow a plant from a seed and measure it everyday and keep a record in a diary.
  • Order food in weight order.
  • Bake some cakes and weigh everything. What would you do if you needed double/half the amount of cakes?
  • Compare the temperature of the fridge to the freezer.
