Writing

Our beliefs

At Studley Green Primary School, we believe that writing is a complex, powerful form of communication that enables pupils to express ideas, organise thinking and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

We believe that pupils become confident writers when they develop secure sentence‑level knowledge, a strong understanding of how texts work, and fluency in the writing process. Writing is therefore not taught as a collection of disconnected text types, but as a carefully sequenced body of knowledge that is built cumulatively over time.

We believe that all pupils, regardless of starting point, are entitled to explicit instruction, high‑quality models and ambitious outcomes. Inclusion is achieved through clarity, structure and deliberate practice, not through reduced expectation.

Our writing curriculum

Our writing curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and knowledge‑rich, and is taught using the CUSP Writing curriculum. CUSP Writing is designed to explicitly teach pupils the conceptual knowledge, competencies and processes required to write effectively.

The curriculum is built around four interconnected strands:

  • Transcription (handwriting, spelling and accuracy)
  • Sentence and grammar knowledge (vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)
  • Text conventions and composition
  • Writing processes (planning, drafting, editing and revising)

Writing is sequenced using a Reduce and Revisit model, where pupils study a smaller number of carefully chosen text forms in greater depth. Each text form is revisited across the year through Block A and Block B units, allowing pupils to:

  • Secure foundational concepts through structured teaching
  • Revisit and apply these concepts with increasing independence and creativity

Teaching begins at sentence level, ensuring pupils develop fluency and control before applying their knowledge to extended writing. High‑quality model texts are used throughout to exemplify language, structure and purpose, and pupils are supported to orally rehearse, plan, draft and edit their writing.

The writing curriculum is deliberately aligned with the wider curriculum, including CUSP Reading and foundation subjects. This reduces cognitive load, strengthens coherence and ensures writing is purposeful and meaningful.

Vocabulary is taught explicitly and revisited systematically so that pupils can write with precision, clarity and sophistication. Teachers model each stage of the writing process, with guided practice supporting pupils to apply new knowledge successfully.

Teaching is adapted where necessary so that all pupils can access the same ambitious curriculum. Support is used to remove barriers to writing, not to limit challenge, ensuring every pupil can make progress as a writer.

Through our writing curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green as fluent, confident and capable writers, equipped with the knowledge, skills and habits needed for secondary school and beyond.
