Science

Our beliefs

The principal focus of science teaching is to enable pupils to experience and observe phenomena, looking more closely at the natural and humanly constructed world around them. (National Curriculum 2014).

Science teaching at Studley Green aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.

At Studley Green, scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school.  It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence.

Our science curriculum

At Studley Green Primary School, our Science curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced, ensuring that all pupils build knowledge and skills cumulatively over time.

We teach Science using CUSP Science, which is rooted in evidence‑led practice and designed to develop secure substantive knowledge alongside disciplinary knowledge. Scientific concepts and enquiry skills are deliberately revisited across year groups so that pupils deepen understanding rather than encounter disconnected content.

Pupils develop knowledge across the three scientific domains:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Alongside this, pupils are explicitly taught to work scientifically, including:

  • Observing closely and asking questions
  • Planning and carrying out investigations
  • Recording, analysing and interpreting results
  • Drawing conclusions and evaluating evidence

Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and carefully revisited so that pupils can explain their thinking clearly and accurately. Vocabulary instruction supports pupils to build precise language, reduce cognitive load, and reason scientifically with confidence.

Teaching is adapted where necessary so that all pupils can access the same ambitious curriculum. Support is used to remove barriers to learning without reducing challenge, ensuring inclusion is achieved through ambition, not simplification.

Through our Science curriculum, we aim for pupils to leave Studley Green as curious, knowledgeable and confident scientists, equipped with the understanding, vocabulary and thinking skills needed for further study and to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
